Bodies wait at a destroyed funeral home in Port-au-Prince. By Ron Haviv VII for msnbc.com

2004 fellow Ron Haviv rushed to Haiti early Wednesday. Tonight he sent this note:

“… having worked in Haiti through coups, military incursions, civil strife, hurricanes, etc. etc. over the last 20 years, I didn’t realize it was possible for Haiti to be brought down another circle in hell. Between the shell-shocked Haitians normally ebullient in even the worst of times to the mass of former humanity at the morgue one wonders how Haiti will rise again …”

What a powerful and haunting combination of words and images, Ron. I am glad you are there documenting the almost unimaginable tragedy and hear you completely about wondering how Haiti will again rise.

In Haiti Ron is in fact a community journalist, which makes the horror so much more personal, because these are his people, too.

These photos come straight from Ron’s soul … there’s no other explanation for their power.
