Fellow speaks for jailed hikers
2006 Ochberg Fellow Kim Komenich, a professor of photojournalism at San Jose State University, plans to speak at a birthday party for Shane Bauer in absentia on Wednesday, July 13 at Rayko Photo Center in San Francisco.
Shane Bauer, a Berkeley photojournalist, was one of three American hikers arrested in 2009 by Iranians while hiking along the border in Iraq. He and Josh Fattal have been detained since then at Evin Prison and reportedly are awaiting trial at the end of the month on espionage charges. The third hiker, Sarah Shourd, who is Bauer’s fiancee, was released last September on a $500,000 bond.
The families of the three met with UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon and requested an investigation into the case. The family reports that Ban said he had “ repeatedly encouraged the leaders of Iran to release the two men. … Ban called their imprisonment ’totally unacceptable.’”
